Putting on and taking off shoes is strenuous and messy. Embark is a shoe storage seat designed to establish ritual and organization in the home.
Features include a built in seat, catch tray, hook, and quick-tying step. Its angled stance fits in standard hallways while providing features of an entry valet. It uses plywood joinery and threaded dowel inserts allowing for reversible configurations and intuitive construction.
There is a clear opportunity to fight fast furniture by designing durable, repairable pieces using efficient manufacturing and extending product lifecycles.
The 3/4” plywood pieces are cut out using an automated CNC router table allowing for rapid manufacturing, scalability, and part replacement.
The cut path is optimized to use all of a 4’x8’ sheet of plywood to create two full sized Embark racks. There were no waste cuts in the process, and material usage was maximized.
Embark considers product lifecycle before all else. The highly efficient means of manufacturing, the use of renewable materials, the flat-pack transportation, and the repairable nature of modular pieces. Embark is designed for a circular economy addressing the issue of overconsumption.
