This project invites us to think about the sustainability of our lives through the concept of the 'grid.' Inspired by the grids of chess and Go boards, it explores the meaning of the planes and lines formed by the grid and relates them to our lives. While the grid’s planes are distinct and limited areas, the grid’s lines are connecting pathways, creating open, expansive territories. Depending on whether we focus on the planes or the lines within the same grid, the direction of our lives could change. From a sustainability perspective, it encourages us to aim for a life that is not confined to limited planes, but one that opens up possibilities to move in all directions along the lines.
Go System is a work that expresses this idea by transforming discarded waste materials into furniture that can be arranged in everyday spaces. When considering a cube, if we focus on the faces, only one person can sit on the top. However, if we focus on the lines and the intersections where they meet, four people can sit at the top corners. By placing circular discs, like Go stones, onto the frame structure made of lines, the possibilities of how the space can be utilized by many people are expanded.
