As part of a university assignment, the challenge was to design a small piece of furniture and build it on a 1:1 scale. The starting point was a given reference image, from which we derived concepts such as pattern, use, contrast, transparency, lightness, and heaviness, which shaped the design process.
This exploration resulted in two prototypes: a sculptural cube as a spatial condensation of the idea and a chair that explores the tension between lightness and heaviness.
The combination of sculpture and seating furniture gave rise to the idea of an extendable object, which was developed into a folding piece of furniture for structural reasons. Playing with geometry and physical forces was the central theme here, as movement and stability had to be brought into harmony with each other.
The form was consistently derived from these geometric and structural requirements, whereby the need for an additional pressure-loaded rod for stabilization became apparent during implementation.
In its final form, the furniture is transformable and serves as a compact, sculptural storage element for displaying objects when closed and as a chair for relaxing when opened.
