Public coastal areas require seating that withstands the elements. The Salish Seat is a circular bench designed for these conditions. It provides a functional place for rest while using unconventional materials to encourage public interaction.
The bench uses a wrapped pattern of 1" Dacron rope over a steel frame. Traditionally used for boat lines, Dacron is chosen for its weather tolerance and ergonomic give. The rope pattern invites people to touch and sit on the surface. This turns a public bench into a visual point of interest that encourages people to engage with the space.
The structure is made of bent 2" steel tubing. The marine grade rope is stretch resistant, UV resistant, and dries quickly. The design prioritizes long-term use through repair. Integrated turnbuckles allow for re-tensioning of the rope and individual parts can be replaced without discarding the entire unit.
This bench system has two sizes including a semicircle and a 240 degree arc. Units can be creatively arranged around trees or posts. Each size allows wheelchair users to sit beside others. The Salish Seat provides an engaging, delightful, and durable seating solution for rainy urban environments.
