My project focuses on an innovative Swedish company called Papershell, which specializes in transforming traditional craft paper into a durable industrial material through the process of compression molding multiple layers. Using cutting-edge manufacturing solutions, Papershell redefines the possibilities of a simple material like craft paper.
The problem lies in the dominance of plastic as the primary material for side chairs that are celebrated for their innovative designs and advanced manufacturing techniques. While these chairs are often lauded for their cutting-edge aesthetics, functionality, and cost efficiency, their reliance on plastic poses significant environmental concerns. Apart from recyclability, the production process itself is resource-intensive and contributes to pollution.
In this work, I explore how this material can be effectively utilized to design a side chair that is sustainable and is a competitive alternative to plastic side chairs.
