Gravity Bench is an urban intervention entwined into its surroundings and adapts to the movements of “The Yard” - a space located within QUT Garden’s Point Campus. The furniture piece takes form over the robust granite safety bollards and in contrast, creates softness with arcs cut from Meranti Verneer Plywood.
A white, non galvanised steel frame supports the body of the bench to create a floating and anti-gravity appearance, whilst tying together two contrasting areas in the environment.

The concept embodies the theme “inside/outside” by transitioning between two distinct spaces. One side of the bollard inhabits a seating area and when the user sits on this side, an internal and more private experience is created. The opposite side accommodates for food trucks and general foot traffic through a transitional space and as a result, the user can lean again this bench for a brief pause through this area, ultimately creating an external experience.
