Wood is a material of quiet beauty, complex by nature. To work with it is to listen.

After a decade as a design director in a New York architecture and interiors firm, I sought to close the gap between designing and making by learning woodworking and building my own chair. I trained in Japan with a master chair maker, studying ergonomics, chair design, and fabrication while engaging in daily sessions of zazen.

The chair emerged through a slow, iterative process of hand drawing, prototyping, testing, and refining. It is not designed for mass production, but as a singular object that reflects the enduring value of craft and its ability to elevate everyday rituals.

Crafted from reclaimed Japanese ash, the wood is given a third life. Each component is selected from specific parts of the tree for optimal grain and strength. Rough shaping is done with power tools, while joinery and finishing are completed by hand using traditional Japanese tools.

Designed to support meditation, the chair addresses the physical challenges of seated practice. By offering ergonomic support, it makes meditation more accessible while honoring the stillness it invites.
