Overlooking Buena Vista Park to the north and with panoramic views of the Twin Peaks to the south, the site demanded a form that took advantage of the small footprint while creating openness and light. The Parti is based on two 25 foot squares separated by a four foot gap containing the stair system. The design developed in physical model form from the get go, a method that emphasized volume above floor plan.
The home occupies a unique place in our office’s portfolio, originally designed in 1999 for a young family. Upon the project’s completion they relocated to the east coast.
The current owners – a young couple from the Far East engaged us to conceive a sweeping series of updates that transformed the interior while leaving the structure, shell and stair intact. Their brief was very clear on one thing: that the home must bring a sense of wonder and delight to each day.
In the kitchen, the stairway and wall of cabinets are melded into a new custom-made system inspired by tansu-style Japanese furniture. The cabinets are finished in vertical grain Douglas fir veneer whereas the two-inch-thick stair treads dovetailing the millwork are crafted from salvaged old growth Douglas fir.

Mark English, AIA, founded his practice in 1992. A Bay Area native, he offers a designer’s sense of artistry supported by practical knowledge gained from years of direct hands-on building experience. The practice is built on providing design that is sustainable because it is sensible and flexible, built to last.
Mark earned a bachelor of architecture degree at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and a master of architecture degree at the Syracuse University campus in Florence, Italy.
